Air Deccan -- Low cost airlines, are they really low cost?

I was traveling from Delhi to Bangalore on 14th May 06. My flight was scheduled for departure at 8pm.
After twice rescheduling, my flight was scheduled to depart at 9pm.

I reached airport well in time. There was no delay shown on indicators or there was no announcement of delay, I was happy that flight was on time.
There were more than 100 people standing in each queue for security check. Kingfisher and GO Air flights were delayed because their passengers were not done with their security check.
Suddenly there are so many low cost airlines introduced in Indian markets but there is no sufficient infrastructure provided to carry on their operations smooth.

Now a days Indian airports are not any better than railway stations. Why standard of traveling by Air has drastically reduced?
Making air travel available to masses doesn't mean to reduce the quality and standard of the service.

Coming back to my plight of air travel.... There were four flights of Air Deccan rescheduled for the same time or difference of maximum 5 minutes.
Flights from Delhi to Bangalore, Chennai , kolkata and Hyderabad were all scheduled between 9 and 9.15pm.
Imagine around 800-900 people waiting for boarding announcement. Forget about place to sit but there is not place to stand properly in the waiting hall.

The worst part of airdeccan is they don't give seat numbers on boarding pass, hence everybody is in hurry to get in first and get good seats.
There is only one boarding gate allocated to Air Deccan and all passengers are around that one gate as nobody has an idea which boarding is announced next.

At this point of time, Air port was worst than any most crowded railway station in India.
AC was not effective after so many people standing in same queue, no place to sit or stand properly.

In such a situation, there was no announcement for next half an hour.
Suddenly there is announcement for Hyderabad passengers. All but Hyderabad passengers are near the boarding gate.
And people were getting panic to get in and there was just scene of hay-wire.
I got to experience best example of worst management.

Funniest part is, one person came for boarding with a plate full of snack and a cold drink in a hand and asks " What do I do now?"
And a supervisor suggested him to finish that and then board. This person finishes his snacks leisurely, boards the flight and even after half an hour of that, there is still announcement of Hyderabad boarding.

Then there comes announcement for boarding of Chennai but not on same boarding gate.... Now people are running from one boarding gate to another with their bags, dragging their kids....
Kids are getting crashed and why all this?? to get a better seat. Isn't that pathetic?

I am not sure When Air Deccan will realize that they should provide Seat numbers on Boarding Pass.
I am still not able to figure out that what is the reason, that they don't provide the same.

Many people took out their frustration yelling at few Air Deccan representatives standing there.
Neither those representative had any answer, nor all this yelling helped in any way.

Finally I heard a boarding call for Bangalore flight to Boarding gate very far off. As all people were doing, I also started running towards that boarding gate.
There was already a big queue. All were trying to get in between a queue.
I was bearing all this. But one Foreigner could not bare all this and started shouting on people to respect queue.
And our Indian brothers rather than respecting his words started a fight with him.
That was most shameful incidence that A person outside our country is teaching discipline in our country.

Finally I was in the Bus which takes us to the flight. Hardly 10-15 passengers were inside, there was a loud cry outside.
One of the air Deccan representative got hurt by a bus because some other guy gave a wrong signal.
Then there is wonderful scene of big fight with slaps and punches etc among all air Deccan representatives.

Again all the boarding gates are closed. None of the flights are able to take off as boarding is stopped.
Now our bus driver gets a order to start. And he asks us... "Aap log kaha ja rahe hai? Aapko kaunsi flight mein chhodana hai??"
This poor guy has no idea that where to drop us as they were no instructions given to him as those representatives were busy fighting.

Finally I was in the flight. Though I was little doubtful if I was on correct flight or not.
It took almost an hour for all the passengers to board the flight after opening the boarding gate.

I felt relieved that finally the flight is going to take off. But that was not enough. Heavy rain with storm came from nowhere.
And we all waited till 3am in the morning in a locked flight hoping rain to stop.

Finally, the flight took off around 3.15am and after quite unstable flying, flight landed on Bangalore airport at 5am in the morning which was supposed to land at 10pm.
Thanks to Air Deccan!!!

PS: If the reader of this blog knows anybody in Air Deccan staff, please forward them this. I want to put my little contribution in improvement of Air Deccan services by giving them this feedback.

Mr. Gopinath, please read this blog!!! (And we hope some changes in services.....)

This is with reference to your email dated 26th May 2006, with regard to your experience while traveling with Air deccan on the Del- Blr sector on the 14th of May 2006. We would like to thank you for taking the time out to share your detailed feedback with us.



We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused to you, owing to the inordinate delay you have faced while traveling with us on the given day. Delays are caused owing to operational issues, technical snags or weather conditions, which are difficult to determine in advance and are at most times beyond the airlines control. Incase of a pre- determined delay we do send out sms intimation to our esteemed passengers, however in case of last minute delay, this may not always be possible. You would apprecaite that with the induction of several new airlines into the country, there is extremely heavy congestion at busy airports like Mumbai and Delhi, wherein such delays have become more frequent. The airport infrastructural facilities have not been able to keep up with the growth in the aviation sector and thereby delays at the Delhi airport are often caused owing to congestion caused by simultaneous departures and with weather related disruptions these issues get aggravated further. We are in the process of negotiating for more infrastructure and space with the Airport Authority of India and we hope the allotment of this space will ease out issues caused owing to congestion.



With regard to our free seating system, Air Deccan is based on the model of low cost airlines worldwide wherein our aircrafts are in the air more than they are on ground. As per this mode of functioning we have a ground time of just 20 minutes on the ATR sectors and 30 minutes on the Airbus sectors. Owing to the above, most low cost airlines worldwide follow a free seating system as it is faster to turn around the aircraft on time. We are in the process of introducing a priority based boarding system based on check in serial numbers, which should be implemented shortly.

My parents booked a Airdeccan for Hyderabad to Chennai on June 27 2006.The return flight was on June 28 but it was unconditionally cancelled. My father got an sms message from Air Deccan.Later my brother called in to ask the reason.They rescheduled to June 28 and I think they asked for 200 for reticketing which is absoultely ridiculous and absurd.

Good to see you blogging.

Well, I have had similar experiences with Air Deccan. Since being a low cost airline, they need to on low turnaround times to breakeven.

But, one thing that caught my attention was the rude behaviour at several places including the queue during boarding & scene at the aircraft. Unfortunately this is the critical area of focus for us. If people behave, then lot of things can be brought under control.

People jumping queues, rushing to board the plane... all is still there. I experienced it as recently as last week. With air travel becoming more accessible and within economical reach, we will have more of the 'junta' and more of such experiences. It reminds me of travel by public transport buses. It was unbelievable that even learned uncle aunties of respectable age (and probably flying for first time) were cutting queues in ahead of us. We were carrying a two and half year old. There was no one to control the crowd to allow ordered boarding in spite of my request in advance. I do not see any connection between low cost and not allowing boarding systematically.

Why blame the airlines, the government for the unsophisticated nature of the people? Just because people rush into the plane like it is an unreserved compartment of a train, doesn't make the airlines responsible. And then again, i've travelled by most of the LCA and air deccan is one of the best, and i recall getting a seat number when i checked in my luggage.

Last week I flew air-deccan from bombay to bangalore. There was a mother and a kd on board. The kid was just 2/3 yrs old and started crying soon after take off. Mother was doing her best to keep him calm. The air-hostess uma came up and asked if she can help. Upon asking if she had any toys or warm milk, she said no. The kid kept crying and the air-hostess kept coming back and asking why would he not stop. After the third time, the mother snapped and told the air-hostess to go away.

Now this idiot air-hostess took it personally and want into the cockpit and informed the pilot. The pilot Mr. gupta (another idiot, calls himself captain gupta) came out and started talking to the mother in a loud voice. he told her that the kid is disturbing other passengers and if he won't shut up, he will land the plane to a nearby airport and they will have to get out of the plane.

Some passengers tried to reason that its a small kid. and they are really not disturbed. Its ok for them. To that the idiot pilot responded saying that you don't come in between and we know what we are doing.

I saw all this and I can clearly see that it can be me in her place next time. So no air-deccan for me ever.

The cabin crew is an idiot and the pilots are egoistic morons. they act like highly paid drivers unworthy of any respect.

air-deccan is truely a low cost airline. the air-hostesses are cheap and pilots also act like true drivers with a big ego. bloody idiots.
